  1. What is "courseware"?
"Training Materials", "Training Manuals", "Workbooks" and "Courseware" are all terms that describe the written material that forms the basis of a training course. Computer Training Courseware usually consists of a series of step-by-step examples that explain to the learner how to use a particular software package. Courseware can take the form of web-based tutorials and may be contained on multimedia CD-ROMS, but the most popular and effective courseware consists of printed, bound manuals that are provided to course participants by a trainer as part of instructor-led training courses.

  7. How will the materials be delivered to me?
We use a convenient and fast process of electronic delivery. Here's how it works:
    1. You place your TrainPack order via our secure PayPal order form.
    2. PayPal processes your order and charges your credit card (or PayPal balance).
    3. You receive a receipt from PayPal via email
    4. We customize your workbooks with the name of your organization at the top of each workbook page.
    5. A password-protected directory is created on our server and your new workbooks are copied to it.
    6. We email you a Welcome letter containing a username, a password and details of how to retrieve your workbooks from our server.

Each workbook is distributed in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF documents print out perfectly on every type of computer/printer combination that can successfully support the excellent, free, Acrobat Reader software. You can download Acrobat Reader directly from Adobe by clicking here. Additionally, each workbook PDF file is packaged as a "zip" archive. We recommend you download a fully functioning demo of WinZip if you don't already have one installed.

  8. Is my courseware purchase a "site license"?
Yes. You can use your courseware throughout your organization. Multiple trainers can print out as many copies of each workbook as they need for everyone connected to your school, workplace or training business. We only ask that you restrict access of the PDF workbooks to your trainers: please only distribute printed hard copies of the courseware to your learners, not the electronic versions.

  9. Do you ship hard-copy workbooks?
No. TrainPack is solely available as electronic PDF documents. This has a number of major advantages for everyone concerned: your initial workbook purchase is available within 24 hours of your order being received, you don't need to maintain an inventory of manuals and, best of all, you don't need to buy individual workbooks for each course participant. Frankly, we don't know why anyone would still go to the trouble and expense of buying costly printed courseware on a per-unit basis.

  10. Do you accept purchase orders/checks or issue invoices?
All of our payment processing is handled by PayPal, who accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express and other credit and debit cards. PayPal also allows direct debit from your bank account and may also offer a range of other payment options.

  13. How long do I have to download my courseware from your server?
Indefinitely. Your initial TrainPack purchase is available for download from your password-protected directory on our server for one week. We delete your workbooks after that week to free-up disk space. You never need to worry about losing a TrainPack workbook.

  14. What is your refund policy?
We will immediately refund the cost of TrainPack if, for whatever reason, you cancel your order before you download your workbooks. We cannot issue a refund if you successfully download at least one of your workbooks.

  15. Who can I give or sell the workbooks to?
You are encouraged to print and bind copies of each workbook for every course participant you train. Every student, employee or training client is welcome to as many printed hard-copy versions of the courseware that you want to give to them. We ask that you respect two of our requests:
    • Please do not distribute electronic PDF copies of your workbooks to anyone except your trainers.
    • Please do not remove your company/business name from the header of each printed workbook page.

  16. Can I distribute the electronic PDF files?
    Please don't. See answer 16.

  17. I would like to verify that, if I purchase and download your workbooks, photocopying them would not be a copyright violation.
Definitely not. You are encouraged to distribute as many printed hard copy versions of your courseware as you want. TrainPack was specifically designed for this purpose.

  18. Some of your sample training manuals refer to a diskette. How is this obtained - do I download the file(s) to diskette for my students? Is this included in the price for the package?
When you visit your TrainPack download page you will see a file called "Student_Files.zip". Download this file, unzip it to your hard drive and copy the folder containing the files relevant to the course you are offering to a floppy disk. Make one diskette per course for each course participant.

  19. Do the workbooks contain step-by-step exercises for students to complete?
Yes. Every TrainPack workbook consists of a sequence of step-by-step exercises that lead the learner through a logical progression of learning activities. In fact, TrainPack was designed to be "learner-oriented" - your courses will largely consist of your students progressing through the material by themselves, with your job as a trainer transformed into a role facilitating your learners' own learning.

  20. Do you have "instructor guides"?
No. All of our courseware is learner-oriented. This simply means that each workbook is a stand-alone course that can successfully be used in instructor-led training and self-paced learning without a trainer.

  21. Do you have "testing materials" for each course?
No. Our courseware is "learner-oriented" rather than "assessment-oriented". A major inhibitor to successful adult learning is the prospect of being "tested" and the subsequent possibility of "failure". For basic computer skills training to be effective, your learners need to feel comfortable with the learning process, and the most powerful method for achieving this is to make your learners responsible for their own learning. Every TrainPack workbook consists of a logical sequence of hands-on exercises, each one building on the last. A learner wanting to "assess" the success of their own training need only ask themselves: "am I comfortable with the skills I just learned?" and "can I apply these new skills to the real problems I face in my day-to-day working life?" There is no risk of failure with this approach and no external pressure to succeed - factors we have found to be essential for adults undergoing basic computer skills training.

  22. How do I evaluate your materials before I commit to buying them?
Visit our Sample Chapters page, download one or more printable sample chapters and print them out. Each chapter has been extracted directly from its parent workbook, giving you a clear indication of the type of layout, exercises and print quality available in the complete TrainPack package.

  23. Does purchasing the workbooks entitle me to alter the content of the books as I require?
As a security measure we do not distribute our workbooks in an editable format. You are welcome, though, to create addenda and appendices that contain the additional information and exercises you want and distribute these with your workbooks. To preserve your corporate identity, you are also encouraged to replace the cover page of your printed copies with one of your own design.

  24. Can I customize the cover of the manuals with my company name?
Yes. Your workbooks are yours and should reflect your corporate identity.

  25. How long will it take to teach one of your courses?
Each TrainPack workbook is about 50-80 pages long and provides exercises for approximately six hours of hands-on, instructor-led training. This is just a guideline however - some of our customers regularly teach courses lasting three hours, while others will spend a couple of days on the same material. The hands-on nature of the exercises in the courseware means that individual learners will want to devote more or less time on each course, depending on their individual strengths, weaknesses and time constraints.

For example, beginners sometimes take a long time to come to grips with basic operating system skills. We have found that the Basic Windows course can sometimes take longer than six hours to deliver - concepts like 'file management' can be a lot to absorb if you haven't been exposed to anything comparable before. The advanced courses, on the other hand, sometimes take shorter than six hours because the individual has already mastered the basic concepts from the introductory courses and just wants to skim over the material to "top up" their existing skill set.

Also keep in mind that all TrainPack courseware was designed to be used for self-paced learning. It is quite possible for you to spend a very short time "training" your learners - sometimes the best way to learn is for a learner to take their workbook home with them to practice the exercises, or just to go back to their work computer and tinker when they have some time to spare.

  26. Can your courseware be used for instructor-led training?
Most definitely. The easy, logical, step-by-step exercises contained in each workbook take most of the pain out of the traditional training role. Your job will mainly be to facilitate the learners own learning, which basically means that you will be there to answer their questions and help them over bumps that they can't get over themselves whilst they navigate their way through the courseware. This approach provides a much more pleasant learning environment than traditional, hierarchical "teaching-type" training, and is monumentally more effective for providing adult learners with basic computer skills.

  27. Can your courseware be used for self-paced learning?
Yes. Self-paced learning is an extremely powerful and effective training technique, especially for organizations with a large employee base. In fact, we firmly believe that guided self-learning and constant practice is the only way for a novice user to acquire basic computer skills effectively. It is also our opinion that short, third-party basic computer skills courses that don't allow your learners to take responsibility for their own skills acquisition can actually do more harm than good. And they're expensive. And they're time-consuming. And they're demoralizing. Third-party IT training with dedicated, professional trainers is great for providing experienced learners with advanced skills focused on the intricacies of specific software packages. But it is quite ineffective for basic skills training, simply because novice adult computer users don't respond well to being "taught" anything: they need to be able to take control of their own learning.

The courseware in TrainPack was designed to let your employees train themselves in an easy and enjoyable way. You'll find that as a user of TrainPack, your organization will quickly start to enjoy many benefits:
    • Your employees will be able to develop essential basic skills at their own computers, at their own pace, whenever they have a spare moment.

    • You will be able to reduce the cost of third-party basic skills training. Your staff will largely provide themselves with fundamental computer skills.

    • Your workplace will become a happier place: a necessary prerequisite for an effective workplace is for the workers within it to feel comfortable using their computers.

    • The hands-on exercises in TrainPack can be directly applied to your employees' day-to-day working lives. The effectiveness of this is reinforced when your employees learn at the computers on their own desks, rather than computers in anonymous training centers.

    • You will be able to save your third-party, instructor-led, IT training dollar for intensive advanced training, rather than basic skills training which, as many of your staff will verify, is largely wasted on beginners. Use TrainPack to provide them with the basics first: they'll then be in a position to absorb a lot more of the information presented to them during future intensive IT training courses.

  28. What age group was this courseware designed for?
TrainPack was designed for novice adult computer users. Nevertheless, many of our customers are schools who have found the workbooks very easy to use - the self-paced step-by-step format is great for all ages.

  29. I can't view your sample chapters. What am I doing wrong?
A number of simple things can go wrong when trying to view and print the TrainPack sample chapters. The following guidelines should fix most problems:
    1. If you visit our Sample Chapters page and click on one of our workbook extracts (with the left mouse button), and if the Acrobat Reader browser plugin is installed, your computer will attempt to load the sample chapter PDF file using the plugin. It is likely that the Acrobat Reader plugin on your computer will attempt to load one page at a time as you read through the document, instead of downloading the entire chapter at the beginning of your session. You can solve this problem by downloading the entire chapter to your hard drive before attempting to view it. You can then open this PDF file using the stand-alone Acrobat Reader software product. Follow the directions below.

    2. Download a sample chapter from our Sample Chapters page by right-clicking on the name of a file you want. Select "Save Target As" from the shortcut menu. Select the folder where you would like to save the file (in the "Save As" dialog box), and click the "Save" button. Wait while the workbook file downloads to your hard-disk. Remember where you have saved the file: you will need to access it later.

    3. Install Acrobat Reader (skip this step if Acrobat Reader is already installed). You should use the stand-alone version of Acrobat Reader rather than the browser plug-in. Acrobat automatically installs two versions of the program - the stand-alone program you can access from the Start menu, and the plug-in that automatically launches when you try to view a PDF file from the web. You are likely to have fewer problems viewing and printing sample chapters (and complete TrainPack workbooks) with the stand-alone program.

    4. Start Acrobat Reader. It will probably appear somewhere on the Start menu (eg. Start...Programs...Acrobat Reader or Start...Programs...Adobe Acrobat...Acrobat Reader). You may also have an "Acrobat Reader" icon on your desktop that you can double-click. Now, in the Acrobat Window select the File...Open menu item. Select the folder where you saved the extracted workbook pdf file. Click on the workbook file (with the .pdf extension, for example Win98Dmo.pdf) and click the "Open" button.

Avoid double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer or My Computer: this may automatically open the file using the browser plug-in.

If these suggestions fail to resolve your problem email us at info@trainpack.com.

  30. The screen-shots are blurry when they are printed. How do I fix this?
If you are using a recent version of Acrobat Reader, and your printer successfully prints other types of documents, then the most common cause of Acrobat printing errors is a missing or damaged printer driver. Try uninstalling/reinstalling your printer, and be sure that the installation process uses the driver that comes on the printer's installation CD or diskette. The default printer drivers that come with Windows can sometimes cause problems. We recommend that you print your workbooks using a Laser Printer with at least 600dpi. Lower printer resolutions and/or inkjet printers can sometimes result in sub-standard print quality. You could also try using the stand-alone Acrobat Reader software, rather than the browser plugin (see the answer to the previous question). If these suggestions fail to resolve your problem email us at info@trainpack.com.

  31. How do I print my manuals on both sides of the paper (duplexing)?
If you don't have a duplexing printer (few of us do), the best alternative is to print out all "odd" pages of the document using the appropriate feature of Acrobat Reader's "print" dialog box. When the odd-numbered pages are finished printing, re-feed the stack into the printer, this time selecting only "even" pages from the "print" dialog box. The "reverse pages" option may help you do this.

Another way is to print out one complete copy as a single-sided document. This then becomes your "Master Workbook". You can then run this master copy through a duplexing photocopier, which will churn out as many double-sided workbooks as you need. Many workplaces have duplexing photocopiers, as do commercial copy centers. Copy centers can also bind your workbooks with attractive covers.
